Have You Ever Felt Like the Third Wheel in Your Own Relationship?

Have you ever been compared to someone else so often that you started to wonder what was wrong with you? Have you ever heard a story about yourself that didn't sound like anything you actually said or did?

If so, you may have experienced triangulation — bringing a third party into a two-person dynamic to create competition, confusion, or division, instead of dealing with an issue directly.

It's Not Always a Person

We tend to picture triangulation as one specific thing: another person. But triangulation can also show up as a behavior, a secret, or even an addiction quietly brought into the relationship in place of honesty.

This can look like:

  • Pornography used as an emotional escape hatch instead of intimacy or communication.

  • Hidden finances — secret credit cards, borrowed money, or debt built and sustained behind a partner's back.

  • Outside "support" — accepting money or favors from others to fund a habit the partner doesn't know about.

  • A community or institution — even a church, group, or cause — used as a shield, a source of validation, or a place to hide from accountability at home.

In each case, something (or someone) else is quietly triangulated into the relationship, pulling energy, honesty, and resources away from the partnership — often while the betrayed partner is left sensing something is wrong but unable to name it.

Why It Feels So Disorienting

Whether the third point of the triangle is a person, a habit, or a hidden bank account, the effect is similar: confusion replaces clarity. You start doubting your own perception instead of questioning the behavior in front of you. Have you ever felt like you needed proof just to trust what you already sensed?

Naming the Pattern Changes Everything

Once you can name triangulation — in whatever form it takes — it becomes much harder for it to keep working on you. You stop untangling each individual incident and start seeing the larger pattern.

Healing is not a linear path, but a journey of understanding the echoes of our own hearts.

If this resonates, you don't have to make sense of it alone. At Bridging Hearts LLC, I offer bilingual (English & Spanish) virtual counseling for New Jersey residents, specializing in relational trauma and narcissistic abuse recovery. Reach out today to start rebuilding trust in yourself.
