Never Been to Therapy? Here's What Starting Looks Like

If you've never been to therapy, reaching out can feel like the hardest part. You might be wondering what you'll be asked, whether you'll have to talk about everything at once, or whether your struggles are "big enough" to deserve support.

I want you to know that those questions are completely normal. Many of the people I work with sat with them for months, sometimes years, before sending that first message. So let me take some of the mystery out of it and walk you through what starting therapy with me actually looks like.

A little about me

I'm Yolanda Garcia-Corby, LCSW, and the owner of Bridging Hearts LLC. I've spent the last 10 years in the clinical field, in community mental health, intensive in-community care, and outpatient settings. Today I offer telehealth counseling in English and Spanish to adults throughout New Jersey.

I specialize in anxiety, relational trauma, and narcissistic abuse recovery. I'm a somatic therapist, which means we pay attention to both your thoughts and what your body is holding. Tight shoulders, a racing heart, or that knot in your stomach are often part of the story too. My background as a yoga teacher and sound healer shapes how gently and holistically I approach this work.

What the first steps look like

  1. A free 15-minute consultation. We start with a short call. You can tell me a little about what's going on, ask any questions you have, and get a feel for whether I'm the right fit for you. There's no pressure and no commitment.

  2. Our first session. This is mostly about getting to know you. We'll talk about what brought you to therapy, what's been feeling heavy, and what you'd like to feel differently. I'll also explain how sessions work so nothing feels like a surprise.

  3. The ongoing work. From there, we build a plan together. Some sessions we'll talk things through. Other times we might slow down, notice what's happening in your body, and practice tools to help your nervous system feel safer and calmer.

Throughout all of it, you set the pace. You never have to share something before you're ready.

Questions first-timers often ask me

"What if I don't know what to say?" That's okay. Most people don't at first. Part of my job is to guide the conversation and help you find the words.

"Is my problem serious enough for therapy?" You don't need to be in crisis to deserve support. If something is weighing on you, it matters.

"What if I cry?" Then you cry. Tears are welcome here, and so is laughter, silence, and everything in between.

"Can I do therapy in Spanish?" Yes. Sometimes the feelings that matter most come out more naturally in the language you grew up with, and I'm happy to work in English, Spanish, or a mix of both.

Taking the first step

Sessions are held by telehealth, so you can meet with me from anywhere in New Jersey that feels comfortable and private. I work with adults 18 and older. I accept Aetna and self-pay, and I also participate with Open Path Collective for more affordable care.

If you've been curious about therapy, consider this your gentle invitation. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to take the first step, and I'll meet you there.

With warmth, Yolanda
